Need a little hope please (lead exposure)

Main Post:

My sweet, amazing, bright, wonderful baby (12 months) tested positive for lead exposure (between 2 and 3 mcg/dl). In our state, the reference level is above 3.5 but that’s bs because the studies show harmful outcomes at much lower levels. All the peer reviewed, published studies I’ve read conclude this is enough to cause long term damage and it is extremely unlikely he will not be affected by this. My only shred of hope at this point is that he was probably only exposed for about the last 3.5 months. But his levels might have been really high at first, we just don’t know.

I’m raging inside because I asked for the lead test at 9 months because I suspected we were at risk (old home, recent renovations), and we were screened by the dr and we were at risk, but the dr discouraged me and said we should wait until 1yr, but by law he was supposed to do the test. Our contractor didn’t follow the law on safe lead practices. We know this now, we just didn’t know at the time.

In the days since the test we have done all we can to address it, but we are going to be spending more money than we have to mitigate the lead around our home.

This was preventable. I am beside myself with fear, anger, and grief. The studies I’ve seen suggest it’s probably already in his bones. We won’t know for years how this is going to affect him, but the studies say that it most likely will. I look at him and I see a ticking time bomb. I’m devastated for my baby.

I want a logical or research based line of thought to override the thought train I have now that is just telling me we irreversibly effed up, our kid is definitely going to be affected by this, and there’s nothing we can do to get back to where he would have been had this never happened. Maybe you’ve been through something comparable as a parent - how did you find your way through it?

Top Comment: I know it’s hard right now, but try not to catastrophize. You’re doing everything you can and you can’t change the past. Older generations had much higher lead exposures than today. Your parents probably had higher levels than your son. Also, if it makes you feel better, I tested positive for lead as a kid. While my exposure may have knocked off 1-2 IQ points, it certainly hasn’t gotten in the way of anything I’ve wanted to do. I’m married with a wonderful child and a successful career. I had a full academic scholarship for undergrad, went to the top program in the country for my master’s, and am working on my doctorate now. Your son will be okay.

How much lead is toxic and can affect you?

Main Post:

Hey guys, i have developed a fear of lead and it has persisted for the past year. I really struggle with it and have developed contamination OCD as a result of it. I'm really scared of getting lead in my body and it has changed how i am as a person entirely. I am much more antisocial and constantly check my surroundings and it is seriously impacting my life. However, I have been taking medication and seeing a professional psychologist for a month now and have seen improvements in my mental health.

Despite this, i feel as if i cannot get over my fear of lead and constantly think my house is dirty, as my dad likes to go fishing and has lead fishing sinkers in the house (which he later threw away). Despite this, I'm still afraid of the "remanents" of the lead sinkers and how they could somehow get into my body. How can i stop stressing about it? Since "no level of lead is safe".

if you don't know much about lead, this is a great video by Veritasium.

Top Comment: Lead can be quiet the toxic compound, but it really matters greatly in which form! Elemental lead, like the fishing weights of your father are relativ stable. Its Pb(0) and is a relativley big/heavy Atom. It will be hard to poison you. Your barrier in form of your skin is very efficient to stop dissolved pb(II) ions from entering. Furthermore one of the more dangerous properties of lead is, if it breaches the blood-brain-barrier. This is as far as i know, quiet rare (usually with organo-lead-compounds). These molecules are nonexistent in nature, easy to destroy and are no real concern for everyday people. As other comments mentioned one of the more dangerous areas with potential harm from lead is areas where it is smelted or combusted (lead acetate in very old engines/fuels) due to its low partial pressure. How can you be sure there is no contamination ? You dont and you really cant do much else then working on your fear. Silly answer: Spray every area with sulfate solutions, so possible lead(II) will react to PbSO4.. /s

What's the deal with lead poisoning in older adults?

Main Post:

I see several oblique refernce to older adults (boomers you might say) being poisoned by lead and thus behaving irrational. Is this real or a tongue in cheek joke? Is this applicable only to the US or worldwide?

What is a lead?

Main Post:

it's supposed to mean "potential client" and "contact info" but When people talk about generating leads which thing they are referring to

Top Comment: Depends on the customer journey and how the client wants to define a lead: Filled out contact form Books a demo Signed up for free trial All those could be considered leads by different brands.

Lead poisoning

Main Post:

I have been freaking out while awaiting a venous lead test for my daughter. She is 2y 4m about 3 weeks ago she had a capillary lead test done and the results came back at 25. I was shocked it should be under 3.5. We had a venous test drawn at her 1y check up and her level was 2.7.

I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what could have caused this lead exposure. Our house was built in 1998, we don't live in an area where there are high levels of lead, I don't keep any old furniture or decorations around. Hoping the venous test results come back soon so we can get the most accurate number.

One thing I am suspicious about is that my husband works in tool and die and frequently welds/works with all types of metal. She is so excited when he gets home from work and usually all over him before he can change and shower. We've discussed plans to change our routine so she isnt touching his clothes until he has cleaned up.

Also, the day she had her capillary test he had been holding her after coming straight from work still in his uniform and I can't help but wonder if the test was contaminated. They had to prick two of her fingers to get the sample and I can't remember if they cleaned both off.

Anyways, I probably should be waiting to freak out until I see the more accurate venous results but worrying is what parents do best, right?

Top Comment: Try not to panic, even if the results of the venous test do come back high, this is something that can be treated. Here's an article about diagnosis and treatment (typically chelation is done when the level is >45): https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lead-poisoning/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20354723 As far as source, it does seem that the environmental exposure from your husband's work may be a contributing factor. Here's a PDF about "take home" exposure. I want to say that shoes can be a main carrying point, too, if he walks through material and then wears those shoes into the house, even just in an entry way where it then gets further tracked onto the floor where babies/toddlers play. Maybe there's a spot outside that he can change clothes/take off shoes and those clothes stay separate? https://www.health.state.mn.us/communities/environment/lead/docs/fs/takehomeeng.pdf Even if it does come back high, try to remember that this is why screening is recommended! To catch cases early and rectify these fluke exposures. You guys are doing great trying to seek out info and address it early!

Be honest about how dangerous this lead situation is.

Main Post:

We just moved in to a 1910 craftsman in California with a toddler and newborn. To save money we will be living here during renovations. We had all the mouldings and floors stripped and stained (before moving in) but there are some areas that I’m REALLY uncomfortable about.

The first is this laundry addition that wasn’t properly waterproofed. The ceiling caved in and the paint is chipping off the walls and onto the ground. I tested this area and it is lead paint. This is our only access to the backyard and I’m really concerned about tracking these paint chips around the house.

The second is that I tested the dust on the newly stained window frames and it came back positive for lead. We had professional cleaners come before we moved in so the fact that this dust accumulated after they came REALLY concerns me.

I tested the kitchen cabinets and they came back positive as well. No chipping but should it concern me that the surface is lead positive?

We’re coming from another old house (1923) so I understand the risks but all of this chipping and dust is new to me. I get my daughter tested every year and am thinking of testing every 6 months moving forward.

I also want to state that the City we live in is dragging out our permitting process and I’m wondering if there is anything I can do, considering that this entire portion of the house is falling down/ unlivable to speed the process up.

Thanks for any and all advice on this!

Top Comment: Not as dangerous as the daylight coming through the roof, or the rotten floor.

New research indicates that childhood lead exposure, which peaked from 1960 through 1990 in most industrialized countries due to the use of lead in gasoline, has negatively impacted mental health and likely caused many cases of mental illness and altered personality.
